Ways to Improve SEO Ranking: Schema Markup

What is Schema Markup? 

Schema markup is one of the more advanced ways to improve SEO ranking. Schema is known as a form of microdata. When it’s added to one of your web pages, it will create what is known as a rich snippet. Rich snippets appear in search results and benefit from an enhanced description and expanded details.  

Schema markup helps to provide further insight into a web page and makes it more appealing to the user. 

Does Schema Markup Help to Improve SEO Ranking? 

Rich snippets produced by Schema Markup stand out from other search results by taking advantage of the enhanced descriptions. The increased influence within SERPs has proven to improve click-through rates in many cases. Although it has proven to improve metrics, there is no evidence to confirm that microdata affects SEO ranking. 

If you choose to use schema markup, you will be giving yourself an upper hand within SERPs and rank above companies that don’t use it.  

How Can it Be Used? 

Schema Markup provides users with a greater insight into the content of your pages, and so it comes in handy to convey rich snippets of information on things such as: 

  • Video Content 
  • Recipes 
  • Book Reviews 
  • Movies 
  • Local Businesses 
  • Products 
  • Events 

There are endless uses for Schema Markup but, the main idea is there for you to see. If there’s valuable information on your web pages, ask yourself, would this information be useful for users to see in SERPs? 

At least a third of Google’s search results display rich snippets, but less than a third of websites use Schema Markup. So, it’s a sure way to improve SEO ranking. 

How to Implement Schema to Your Website 

Implementing Schema Markup looks like NASA tier work, but it doesn’t require new coding skills and is simple to implement so, follow my lead.  

  1. Visit the Structured Data Markup Helper Tool. 
  2. Click on the type of data you want to markup. 
  3. Paste the URL of the web page or article you want to mark up. 
  4. Locate and highlight the different elements you want to be marked up. 
  5. Continue to add markup items. * 
  6. Create the HTML. 
  7. Use the Structured Data Testing Tool to discover what your page will look like with the markup. This tool is also usable for testing any warnings. 
  8. Add the generated schema markup to your web page. You can also add this before testing if necessary. 

*Use the list of data items for reference and continue highlighting the other items in your article to add them to the markup list. If you can’t tag every item, gather the ones that are required (Note: The more items you add, the better).
